KAMPALA, UGANDA – Kampala city is blessed with a number of tourist attractions and yet the majority of its residents never take time off to visit these attractions. Many of Kampala residents though, participate in social events in tens of thousands leading Kampala to be known as the ‘entertainment capital’ of the East African region, with citizens of the other EAC members crossing to Uganda on the weekends to partake of Kampala night life. This traffic also fills up mid-range hotels on the weekends with guests who in most cases have less to do during day as they wait for the vibrant Kampala night-life.
Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) is partnering with Tendo Bikes to organize the Jamii Social Ride to encourage Kampala residents and hotel guests to tour the city by cycling to different tourist attractions around Kampala city. The Jamii Social Rides will be happening every last Sunday of the month, for starters.
UTB will partner with Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), who are also partners in the organization of Jamii Social Rides, to build cycling lanes on Kampala roads so that many of Kampala residents especially the corporate can be encouraged to cycle to work instead of driving. This will help to protect our environment by reducing on the air pollution by vehicles, which will also have health and financial benefits to the participants.
The first Jamii Social Ride is scheduled for Sunday 30th September, 2018, and the flag off and finish will be at the Uganda Museum from 7:00am – 9:00am. UTB would like to take this opportunity to invite all Kampala residents and parents to come with their kids to participate in the inaugural Jamii Social Ride. Those with their own bikes are welcome and those without will be given a chance to hire at a minimal fee of UGX 10,000 (approx. $3).
