KAMPALA, UGANDA – The Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) is yet again hosting the annual Pearl of Africa Tourism Expo (POATE) from 17-19 February 2017 at the Kololo Independence Grounds in Kampala.
The Pearl of Africa Tourism Expo is one of the annual events in the East African region organized by Uganda Tourism Board (UTB). Now in its third year, Pearl of Africa Tourism Expo focuses on pushing the tourism business agenda to all Ugandans under the theme, “Tourism is everybody’s business”.
“Over the last year and so, it has become accepted that tourism is a major driver of our economy and not only promoting national development but also changing lives of our people,” says Prof. Ephraim Kamuntu, Minister for Tourism, Wildlife & Antiquities. He says the number of people being directly employed in the tourism industry is growing as Ugandans begin growing their investments in the sector.
Stephen Asiimwe, the CEO UTB says the growth of the international domestic interest in the expo in every way compliments the many national domestic tourism campaigns that have been championed by UTB, the tourism ministry and several private individuals and organizations.
“The year since the last POATE has been filled with activities and events the tourism sector has not seen before,” Asiimwe says. “And this has not gone unnoticed. Already over 70 international exhibitors, national tourism boards and media have confirmed participation. Locally, the registration goes on and we are seeing a lot of interest from small and new business. That is a good sign for the future of tourism business in Uganda.”
The Expo brings together tourism business operators to meet new clients, network, promote and market their businesses. POATE 2017 will also deliberately focus on business for the 13 tourism clusters that UTB works with. Clusters are regional associations bringing together tourism businesses and stakeholders for purpose of promoting specific regions in Uganda.
The highlight of the Expo is the Tourism Excellence Awards organized for Sunday 19th February 2017 at Kampala Serena Hotel to close off POATE 2017. The Awards are aimed at recognizing and appreciating the hard work and dedication of individuals and companies that have led to the tremendous growth of Uganda’s tourism over the years.
The Executive Director of the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) the organization in charge of the parks says they are ready for all guests to the parks come 2017.
“We welcome regional partners and friends to Uganda and particularly the protected areas to enjoy the beauty and diversity of the natural resources that we are endowed with. We have been at the forefront of conserving the wildlife in the parks for national and international benefit and are happy to open our doors to you, during the Pearl of Africa Tourism Exhibition,” says Dr. Andrew Seguya Executive Director of the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA).
“Some of Africa’s best kept secrets are calling; Uganda’s finest tour operators welcome you to the 4th edition of the Pearl of Africa Tourism Expo 2017,”says Babra Adoso, Chairperson of the Association of Uganda Tour Operators (AUTO).
